The resources explain what is symbolized with everything done, but "why" do we do that in the first place? Do we do this "just because" or does Scripture direct it? Where else do we see making up symbolism for aspects of worship?

Well, if we head down that road pastors shouldn't wear pants, pulpits should be banned, we should recline at gigantic tables for communion, and crosses should be banned! :)

That's the diffrence between a Puritan RPW-oriented church and a more continental view of adiaphora. We're definitely not hardcore RPW folk.

Not familiar with the term RPW.

What does Calvin say on it? What about Luther? Which continental reformers were supportive of it?

Thanks!

Garrett

RPW=Regulative Principle of Worship. As far as who did what specific thing during Advent, I have no idea. I would suggest a book on the RPW which is "Covenantal Worship" by RJ Gore. Also, Jeff has a chapter on the RPW in "The Lord's Service."
